Cantina Laredo to offer Tamales to Go now through December 24
Long a tradition in Mexican communities, tamales have become a part of the Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition in Texas, too. Because of their labor-intensive preparation, tamales are normally only prepared for special occasions like Christmas. All Cantina Laredo locations in North Texas will be offering house-made tamales to go, with pick up available every day with at least six hours notice. Both Chicken and Beef tamales will be available at $16.95/dozen. Sales for tamales begin on November 8.
- The corn masa-and-meat bundles — individually wrapped in corn husks and then steamed — are part of the traditional Mexican celebration of las posadas, which commemorates Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter before the birth of Jesus.
- One theory is tamales have been traditional Christmas Eve fare for centuries because they’re portable, easy to store and inexpensive to make for large gatherings.
- Through the years, the preparation of the labor-intensive food became a social event, called a tamalada, as womenfolk from ranches across Mexico and what’s now the American Southwest gathered to prepare the Christmas Eve feast.
- Tamales date back to the 13th century and the Aztec empire.
